After leaving the post-punk mayhem of the Birthday Party behind, Australian rocker Nick Cave turned toward a somewhat quieter--but equally dark--sound. Recruiting Birthday Party member Mick Harvey, Einsturzende Neubauten frontman Blixa Bargeld, and other formidable musicians, Cave assembled the Bad Seeds to join him on his venture into moody troubadour territory. Over time, the brooding showman's songs have become more narrative and meditative, casting him as something of a Leonard Cohen of his generation. That said, Cave has never stopped rocking and in the early 2000s he formed Grinderman, perhaps his most aggressive sonic assault since the Birthday Party.
