Premier Lone Star State bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins is the subject of this installment in THE BLUES ANTHOLOGY series. Hopkins was known for his deft six-string capabilities (hence his moniker) and his always-surprising facility for impromptu lyrics and narratives (he was as much a storyteller as a musician), and his skills translated into rustic acoustic settings and blistering electric ones alike.

THE BLUES ANTHOLOGY works nicely as a sampler of Hopkins styles, bringing together some of his signature tunes ("Mojo Hand") with standard slow blues ("Glory Bee") and Texas-specific songs ("Houston Bound") among a host of others. Since Hopkins recorded prolifically for any number of labels in his day, this well-compiled, 21-song set is a fine place for the novice to start exploring the work of this extraordinary master.
