Review

Entertainment Weekly (5/17/96, p.63) - "...Watson does honky-tonk the old-fashioned way, without regard for radio, only for real-life themes (truckers, cheaters, sausage and eggs) and instrumental solos as authentically roadhouse as sweat-stained shirts and a neon tan." - Rating: B+

Title Note

Dale Watson & His Lone Stars: Dale Watson (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Dave Biller (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Floyd Domino (piano, Wurlitzer electric piano); Craig Pettigrew (bass); Terry Westbrook (drums).

Additional personnel: Johnny Bush (vocals); Robert Lily (acoustic guitar); Lloyd Maines (steel & acoustic guitars); Scott Walls (steel guitar); Gene Elders (fiddle); Karen Poston, Kari Norwood, John Minton (background vocals).

Recorded at Pedernales Studio, Spicewood, Texas and Arlyn Studio, Austin, Texas.

On his second to-the-bone outing, Texan Watson continues his crusade for the resuscitation of the spirits of the sleeping (or ignored) legends of classic C&W. Watson possesses a resonant, honeyed-baritone vocal instrument and seems most at home in early Merle Haggard-styled turf. But this singer-songwriter can also dial up Buck Owens, Faron Young, and countless other titans of the genre without breaking a sweat.

All 14 tracks on BLESSED OR DAMNED were either written or co-written by Watson, but only a fanatic with an encyclopedic memory could swear to it. This cat is the real deal, in spades. Some may find Watson's near-militant devotion to authentic, pre-'70s country music a tad humorless, but it's hard to argue with the results. "A Real Country Song" bemoans Nash-rock's desolate radio landscape with inspiring name-checks, and the rest of Watson's tunes swing, weep, two-step, and/or soar with similar, unquestionable commitment.
