It's amazing to consider the mileage that Roy Orbison's estate has gotten out of this one HBO concert, between the original cablecast, the various VHS and laserdisc editions, and this most recent DVD version (which is either the second or third -- this reviewer has lost count). It was an excellent performance by Orbison, to be sure, but the all-star band surrounding him, including Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, T-Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, et al., also helps keep up the continually renewing interest, of course. Additionally, it also helps that it was a state-of-the-art recording and video, and that all of the pre-mastering materials have been preserved, because it keeps getting upgraded. This double-disc set offers a remixed Super Audio CD of the concert, in sound so loud and crisp that it startles in its closeness and intimacy, and also the complete concert on a DVD mastered with Dolby Surround as well. (There's also a DVD/DVD-Audio version of the package, for those who prefer the DVD-Audio format). The multi-channel SACD sound is killer, putting you right at center-stage, but even the two-channel SACD master is pretty impressive, so close that you can practically hear the action on the instruments. The resulting package is just about the best representation of a televised concert by a classic rock & roll star that we've had, at least this side of some of the work done in connection with Elvis Presley, and well worth the upgrade from earlier editions. ~ Bruce Eder
