Abandoning both her major-label contract and the sample-based dance pop of her earlier albums, Imani Coppola returns with the musically abrasive, lyrically pointed THE BLACK AND WHITE ALBUM. As the album title suggests, Coppola's main topic in these 14 songs is her bi-racial background: "Woke Up White" concerns hipster gentrification in her native Brooklyn, while "I Love Your Hair" touches on a familiar point of racial and gender conflict. Musically, the album veers from stroppy punk rock to R&B grooves and back, for a sound as multi-layered as Coppola's provocative lyrics.
