Review

Uncut (p.112) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here is greatness here: the Ray Davies-like 'Butterflies Into Worms', the Leonard Cohen-ish 'Blackeyed Susans', and 'Closing In The Dark'..."
Q (Magazine) (p.151) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[F]reewheeling between tango, country lament, '60s-style pop and even some unlikely hip hop..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.120) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[D]iehard proof of a songwriter whose melodies are among the most persuasive of his generation."

Title Note

The Triffids: "Evil" Graham Lee, Jill Birt, Alsy Macdonald, Robert McComb, Rita Menendez, Phillip Kakulas, David McComb, Adam Peters, Martyn P. Casey.

On 1989's THE BLACK SWAN, Sydney's Triffids deploy A-list producer Stephen Street not to make a grand statement of purpose, but to depart from their indie-folk signature sound and explore sometimes radically new sonic territory. The result, which incorporates electronic drum beats and elements everything from cabaret music to hip hop, is disarmingly adventurous but never, for a moment, dull.
