After a bitter split with his Husker Du bandmates, Bob Mould risked complete alienation from his former fans by releasing a relatively mellow, semi-acoustic solo album in 1989. Far from alienating people, his solo career established him as an ever-maturing songwriting force. By 1994, the music world was fixated on the new phenomenon of commercially viable "alternative rock," and Mould skillfully rode that wave with his new band, Sugar, whose explosive, melodic songs neared the intensity of old Huskers' material, if not matching its land-speed records and volume. After a second Sugar album, Mould went back to working solo, continuing to hone his sound, even attempting forays into electronica.
