Fennesz Artist Snapshot:

Vienna- and Paris-based ambient electronic pioneer Christian Fennesz, more often known simply as Fennesz, got his start in the late-'80s Viennese noise-pop group Maische. After experimenting with techno in the early 1990s, Fennesz settled on his trademark approach: diffuse soundscapes built around guitars, synthesizers, and laptops, punctuated with beats and glitch textures, and washed over with waves of white noise. Albums such as 1997 debut HOTEL PARAL.LEL, 2001's ENDLESS SUMMER, and 2004's VENICE earned Frennesz a cult following; through collaborations with Sparklehorse, Jim O'Rourke, British singer David Sylvain, and Mike Patton.

Review

Mojo (Publisher) (p.114) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[W]ith BLACK SEA, the spectral colours have become submerged beneath a dark cloud of MBV drone, blues chords and distant, decaying strings."
Clash (magazine) (p.100) - "BLACK SEA is deeper and even more sedentary than 2004's ax-bient classic 'Venice,' but still just as engaging....A slow revealer, BLACK SEA is a treasure chest for dreamers and droners to get truly lost in."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Many of the definitive characteristics of Fennesz's mien remain intact -- reverb-drenched guitars and atomised grains sown in effect-driven fields -- but they're wielded into thrillingly unconstrained tapestries..."
Signal To Noise (magazine) (p.54) - "Fennesz seems always to return to a kind of folksy arpeggiating on his guitar, a cool, mentholated space that is like mood music for hipsters."
