Review

No Depression (p.114) - "[With] a stylistic range from hollow-eyed Buddy Holly references to gothic Henry Mancini takes and a sort of mash-up between Pavement and Pat Metheney, all in a good way."

Title Note

The Zincs: James Elkington (vocals, guitar); Nathaniel Braddock (guitar, piano); Nick Macri (saxophone, bass guitar); Jason Toth (drums, percussion).

Recording information: 2006.

Though a Chicago resident, the Zincs' frontman Jim Elkington hails from England. And his band's sound on its debut, DIMMER, fits nicely between Morrissey and Belle and Sebastian on the Anglo-meter. Yet somehow the Zincs were able to dust off the proceedings with the slightest hints of stark Chicago alt-country. BLACK POMPADOUR, the band's third collection, contains Elkington's trademark acerbic lyrics hitched to bright melodies, but ups the ante and toughens the sound with confident electric guitar and organ interplay. Indie chanteuse Edith Frost guests on a few tracks.
