While there was an avalanche of bands in the early 2000s carrying forth the flower-speckled battle axes of psychedelic warriors from eras past, few were as committed to true musical exploration and craftsmanship as Vancouver's Black Mountain. Initial releases betrayed a massive Black Sabbath fixation, yet even early on there was a diversity of style and approach to the band's sound amidst the doomy riffage. It was on 2008's IN THE FUTURE that Black Mountain truly hit their stride, creating an epic, prog-inflected album that was also immediately listenable. Though an independent-minded band, Black Mountain has had numerous interactions with the mainstream, perhaps most notably as the hand-picked opening act on Coldplay's 2005 tour.
