Afghan Whigs Artist Snapshot:

The Afghan Whigs played a brand of smart no-frills rock perfectly suited to benefit from an interest in the underground generated by the grunge bonanza. Led by tortured soul Greg Dulli, the Whigs infused their tough guitar-based sound with elements of country, roots rock, and, later, a 1970s R&B vibe. Since the band's break-up in 2001, Dulli has gone on to captain the heavily soul-influenced ensemble the Twilight Singers.

Review

Rolling Stone (3/21/96, p.96) - 3 Stars - Good - "...there are elements of originality to be found in the way Afghan Whigs fuse alternative rock's victim mentality with funk and soul to find a moment of transcendence..."
Spin (4/96, pp.111-112) - 8 - Very Good - "...wisely emphasizes the band's exceptional qualities and de-emphasizes the alt-rock overlays....when a couple of songs, like the magnificent `Going To Town' and `Faded,' use dance beats or gospel straight-up, Afghan Whigs never quite offer the mere soul recital..."
Q (4/96, p.107) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...its mature aspirations and stylish gait stand tall amongst the sorry, derivative imports that constitute this year's `American Invasion'..."
Melody Maker (12/21-28/96, pp.66-67) - Ranked #8 on Melody Maker's list of 1996's `Albums Of The Year.'
Melody Maker (3/2/96, p.36) - Bloody Essential - "...reeks of suspicion, doubt, paranoia, double-dealing and retribution....The Whigs' brand of rock has a kind of rich meatiness which not only marks them as quintessentially male...but also gives their slabby, prime-steak sound a suffocating darkness and density..."
Musician (5/96, p.93) - "...seeking new and inventive ways to depict a soul on fire...BLACK LOVE...portrays lust, revenge, anger and other juicy stuff with [Dulli's] usual impressive fervor..."
RIP (5/96, p.16) - 3 - Meat & Potatoes - "...the band excels, approaching genuine rock intrigue and mystery. Dulli's vocals on `Blame Etc.' really triumph with a frightening quality that is quite unique among today's plethora of pseudo-deep intellectuality."
NME (Magazine) (12/21-28/96, pp.66-67) - Ranked #31 in NME's 1996 critic's poll.
NME (Magazine) (3/9/96, p.40) - 9 (out of 10) - "...the albums they make are the closest pop ever comes to imitating a novel--and not after a self-conscious, Lou Reed fashion, but with all the light and shade that a well-structured novel casts..."

Title Note

Afghan Whigs: Greg Dulli (vocals, guitar, drums, timpani, sleigh bells, percussion); John Curley (vocals, guitar, bass, Arp synthesizer); Harold Chichester (vocals, piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano, Clavinet, organ); Doug Falsetti (vocals, percussion); Jeff Powell, Shawn Smith (vocals); Rick McCollum (guitar, pedal steel guitar, hammer dulcimer); Barbara Hunter (cello); Paul Buchignani (drums, congas, percussion); Jeffrey Reed (effects).

Recorded at Bear Creek, Woodinville, Washington and Robert Lang's Studio, Edmonds, Washington in August and September 1995.

Well into a career of stoking misery's emotive fires, Greg Dulli and his Afghan Whigs launch into another album that plays like a movie. Appropriately, BLACK LOVE's thematic lyrics, its noire-ish rock-meets-soul styles, and its cover-art are like a grab-bag of clues, depicting the darker side of the human condition. The opening track, "Crime Scene Part One," is one tip-off, the burning sticks of incense are another--both are hints at the indefinite, smoldering and depraved natures of the album's characters.

BLACK LOVE unravels like a dangerous mystery of betrayal. Through Dulli's lense, you witness the sense of fury-inspired disaster--"I'll get the car/You get the match and gasoline," he venomously sings on the brutal "Going To Town." On the wings of a funky, grating guitar of "Blame, Etc.," Dulli manages to uniquely twist the words "blame, deny, betray, divide" into nearly sensual sentiments. Another gripping album, BLACK LOVE brings Dulli's grand cinematic songwriting into focus.
