This NYC trio--formerly named First Nation--is in more ways than one the sister band to Brooklyn's noise-hippie superstars, Animal Collective. For one, Abby Portner is Avey Tare's actual sister; and Paw Tracks, Animal Collective's label, is Rings' home base. More importantly, Rings and their mesmerizing debut, BLACK HABIT, embody the same anything-goes spirit and liberty with form that makes A.C.'s music so riveting. BLACK HABIT's eight tracks are intricately crafted shards of circular melody, instrumental rounds, and Raincoats-style inspired primitivism. Aces.
