Beat Happening's third record, BLACK CANDY, is musically more polished and lyrically mostly more serious than its previous two albums--and, at 30 minutes, it's also longer. Retaining a sense of willful amateurism in its playing, the band here devotes more time to developing its curious version of "scary" music, which more than anything else resembles a junior high school band covering Cramps songs--see the title track and "Pajama Party in a Haunted Hive," in particular.

Other standouts include "Other Side," featuring sweet, but not saccharine, lyrics and a duet between Calvin and Heather. Meanwhile "Cast a Shadow" is a smooth pop gem with some roughened edges courtesy of a blown-out guitar and Calvin's deep talking/singing vocal; "TV Girl" is a halting and lurching ode to the girl of the title that veers charmingly in and out of tune; and "Playhouse" features a comparatively complex drum pattern that dovetails the guitar line. Arguably, the best track is "Knick Knack," a gently chugging pop song sung in Heather's breathless vocals. Though perhaps not as immediately engaging as previous Beat Happening outings, BLACK CANDY is an entertaining stepping stone on the path to the band's masterpiece, YOU TURN ME ON.
