Title Note

Personnel: Carmen McRae (vocals, piano); Norman Simmons (piano); Mundell Lowe (guitar); Victor Sproles (bass); Curtis Boyd (drums).

Originally released on Focus (334). Includes liner notes by Ralph J.Gleason and James Gavin.

Carmen McRae was always the most intelligent and discerning of the great jazz vocalists though she never did have that one big album (or a few) to put her over the top like Ella, Sarah or even Dinah. Still, one reason 1964's BITTERSWEET is so special is that it was the first meeting between McRae and her eventual long-term accompanist, the pianist Norman Simmons. The result is one of the vocalist's best albums, a spare, somewhat dark-hued set of ballads recorded in close, natural sound. Here there is yet another outstanding version of "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most," maybe the best one ever, and it's also nice to hear a straight jazz version of "When Sunny Gets Blue" as an alternative to Johnny Mathis.
