Charlie Parker Artist Snapshot:

Charlie Parker's combination of sheer genius and pure emotion on the saxophone has few rivals, and after him, nothing would be the same. As one of the creators of bebop in the 1940s and 1950s (alongside Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, and others), Parker, aka Bird, introduced a new level of expression to jazz, one that combined stunning technique, profound musical knowledge, and, above all, the ability to make complex ideas sound simple, soulful, and inevitable. Dead at just 34, Parker left behind a legacy that many have tried to equal, but none has surpassed.

Dizzy Gillespie Artist Snapshot:

If Charlie Parker was the chief architect of the bop revolution of the 1940s, Dizzy Gillespie was its standard-bearer, an evangelist who battled public hostility and incomprehension with rapier wit. A trumpeter of dazzling virtuosity, he matched Parker's rhythmic innovations with deft harmonic ingenuity. He also functioned as teacher, putting his vast knowledge of harmony at the disposal of younger musicians like Miles Davis, who were trying to get a handle on the new sound. His historic big band featuring Chano Pozo was the first large-scale attempt to combine Latin music with jazz, and the unflagging excellence of his subsequent career was a tribute to the integrity of his original vision. He died in 1993.

Did you ever say "I sure would like to have been a fly on the wall for the recording of that album?" Now you can be, with Verve's Master Edition of BIRD AND DIZ, the final collaborative recording date by the two giants of bebop. This was also the only time the duo ever recorded with Thelonious Monk. Every utterance from the session is preserved here, including mistakes, false starts and studio chatter. The quicksilver bop lines of Parker's sax and Gillespie's trumpet ride over the angular piano punctuation of Monk and the bombastic drumming of Buddy Rich.
