With their Flaming Lips-style whimsical pop and an abiding love for half-century-old standards matched with Inara George's wispy, winsome vocals, a sweet coquettish coo subversively hinting at gin-soaked debauchery, the Bird (George, daughter of Little Feat's Lowell George) and the Bee (Greg Kurstin, ex- of similarly minded Geggy Tah) earned a deserved spot as Blue Note's resident indie popsters in the `00s. The pair met cute when an impromptu jam session was brought on by a shared adoration of musty jazz classics. They inched their way into the pop subconscious as critics clamored to fete their enchanting LPs and as their lushly cinematic compositions became natural soundtrack staples.

There have been many duos in the history of pop music, but few, if any, like the Bird and the Bee. Consisting of Greg Kurstin (all instruments except horns) and Inara George (vocals, and daughter of late Little Feat guitarist Lowell George), Bird and the Bee craft sleek, refined pop songs rich with edgy humor, all seductively conveyed by George's distinctively cool, feathery voice. With its elegant mix of alt-rock catchiness (think Blondie, XTC, Stereolab) and some Brazilian bossa nova touches, THE BIRD AND THE BEE is a noteworthy debut disc.
