Product note

Personnel: Billy Joe Shaver (vocals, guitar); Eddy Shaver (vocals, guitar); David Cochran, Keith Christopher (bass guitar); Craig Wright, Gregg Morrow (drums).
Recording information: Bennett House, Franklin, Tennessee; Imagine Studios, Nashville, Tennessee; Ace Of Clubs, Nashville, Tennessee; Sound Stage, Nashville, Tennessee; Waco, Texas.
Outlaw Country hero Billy Joe Shaver performed for years with his guitar-playing son Eddy as the duo Shaver. Some time after the younger Shaver died of a drug overdose in 2000, his father decided to complete the unfinished tracks for what would have been Eddy's first solo album. Nearly all the songs were co-written by Eddy, and feature his guitar and vocals. Eddy had always brought a driving rock influence to Billy Joe's songs, and that influence has never been more apparent than on BILLY AND THE KID.
Appropriately for someone who learned to play under the wing of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts and was given Duane Allman's guitar as a teenager, Eddy bore a strong Allman Brothers influence in his searing, twangy guitar work, gravelly, Gregg Allman-like vocals, and blues-rock song structures. Were it not for the lighter touches of Billy Joe's contributions, BILLY AND THE KID might have sounded quite a bit like a latter-day Gregg Allman solo album. As it stands, the disc is a hybrid of country, rock, and blues, tilted a bit more to the harder side of things than the Shaver albums.
