Encased in an economical foldout digipack picture sleeve, Madacy's three-disc Johnny Cash retrospective is light on the frills, but the aptly titled Bigger Than Life Collection makes up for its austere presentation with 36 classic tracks from the artist's '50s and '60s heydays at a great price. Lesser-know Cash hits like "Guess Things Happen That Way" and "Get Rhythm" share the spotlight with repeat offenders such as "Folsom Prison Blues," "I Walk the Line," and "A Boy Named Sue," providing the listener with enough familiarity to dig into later covers like "City of New Orleans" and Shel Silverstein's "Boa Constrictor" without trepidation. While numerous Cash compilations are far superior, Bigger Than Life is an affordable introduction to one of music's most prolific late visionaries. ~ James Christopher Monger
