Released in 2002, this remarkably comprehensive four-disc box set presents saxophone titan Ben Webster performing as both a bandleader and with other ensembles. Focusing on Webster's 1930s and '40s output, BIG BEN finds the revered reedsman sitting in with many of the era's biggest names, including Duke Ellington, Jack Teagarden, and Slim Gaillard. Although the big-band numbers here are undeniably great, the finest moments of this collection are when Webster takes center stage himself, as on the rollicking "Teezol" and "The Jeep Is Jumpin'," which showcase his deep, resonant sax sound.
