(Derek's sister, country singer Julianne Hough, also appears on the series.) The debut album by the lifelong friends' band is tuneful pop-rock in the style of acts like Maroon 5 and David Cook. 4 out of 5 stars From Ballroom Dancers to Pop Stars, March 30, 2009
By StacieinAtlanta
The Ballas Hough Band has a good, solid, upbeat sound for their debut album titled BHB. Anyone whos given ABCs hit show Dancing With the Stars even a passing glance knows the names Mark Ballas and Derek Hough. Growing up in musically inclined families heavily influenced their fresh sound very reminiscent of Maroon 5. The Ballas Hough Band credits a diverse range of influences -- from Michael Jackson to Prince, Queen, and even Nirvana. Their first single "Do It For You" is the perfect introduction to the bands pop sensibilities especially having been co-written by the new American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi. They are easy to listen to, my kids love them and so they are definitely added to our music repertoire. Give them a listen and you will find yourself singing along to "Do It For You" or "Closer."

I received this Ballas Hough Band cd through the One2One Network to review and I was very pleasantly surprised! Its been my favorite one so far! I love Mark Ballas and Derek Hough on Dancing With the Stars, so I was hoping I would like their singing as well! I cant believe how multi-talented these guys are! The cd turned out to be great! The lyrics and music are very catchy and stay in your head and I like that my kids can listen along with me--no trashy lyrics in these songs to worry about!

Ballas Hough Band released their first CD earlier this month -- and I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek listen! The core of the Ballas Hough Band (formerly known as Almost Amy) is Mark Ballas and Derek Hough. They are best known as competitive ballroom dancers on ABCs Dancing with the Stars. Dereks sister, country singer Julianne Hough, also appears on the series. Ballas has been performing since a young age and composes the groups music, plays lead guitar and sings lead vocals. Hough also sang a duet, "Dreaming Under The Same Moon", with his sister Julianne on her self-titled debut album. I would describe their music as a mix of acoustic, pop, rock, and soul. I especially enjoyed the club-ready "Do You Love Me?" and the revved-up "Fall". The melodies are catchy and give you a feel-good vibe. Fans of the Jonas Brothers and Maroon 5 will love this album!

3 out of 5 stars Good CD to listen to while traveling, March 28, 2009

This CD is ok. The music is a little too soft for me. I prefer music that is a little more upbeat. The CD is good for listening to on a long, relaxing train ride or airplane flight but not so great for a dance club or party.

3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good!, March 27, 2009

I was a bit surprised at this band. I did not expect them to be much good. I have been watching them on Dancing with the Stars and thought this was just another way for them to get noticed. They actually can sing. However, I think they are more for the younger people than the older ones. I believe teens especially teen girls will love them. They have a blend of sounds like the Maroon 5 and the Jonas Brothers, with a little of the David Archuleta sound. I love the song, “Longing For”. You get to hear Emily Grace on this one and she is really good. Some of my favorites on this album are: “Underwater”, “Do It for You”, and “Birthday”. Mark Ballas and Derek Hough have great vocals and are very talented. Mark wrote most of the songs on the album. On “Ballas Hough Band”, all the songs had the same type of tone and style. It kind of got boring after the first few songs. Maybe they can change up a little on their next album, give adding more variety in they types of songs. I would love to hear they do some soft as well as really powerful vocals. Other than that, this is a great album and is worth its price.

Anyone who is a fan of "Dancing with the Stars" knows Mark Ballas and Derek Hough, but, they may not know exactly how multi-talented these guys are. This is the type of cd that grows on you. I am not a huge pop music fan, but, the more I listen to the songs, the more I enjoy them. The mood is very uptempo and is great for dancing. I also found its excellent for working out or for cleaning house. It really is high-energy and upbeat. Their sound, for me, is like a combination of George Michael and Wham, Michael Jackson, and Prince - with a hint of Marc Anthony thrown in. It is the type of cd that I feel would definitely appeal to a young crowd, but, that doesnt mean all ages cant enjoy it. Its feel-good music. The cd begins with "Do You Love Me" which is very current, head bopping music. "Devastated" is catchy, about the ups and downs of love. I really like the harmonies in this. My favorite of the cd is definitely "Underwater. For me, its the most moving and has a slow sensual feel, almost dreamlike. Overall, BHB is the type of cd you want to crank up and play anytime you want to jam. BHB is like cotton candy - light, tasty, fun and leaves you smiling.

5 out of 5 stars WORTH A LISTEN, March 26, 2009

I expected The Ballas Hough Bands first album to be like so many other celebrity-turned-singer albums, all fluff and no talent. I have to admit I was wrong! What I knew of them was from their appearances on Dancing With the Stars, so I wasn’t expecting pop music! Their sound is Very boy-band, but in a good way. The Ballas Hough Band credits Michael Jackson, Prince, Queen, and Nirvana as their early inspirations and their influences can be heard throughout. Their single, “Do It For You” was co-written by the new American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi - it’s a pop song that reminds me of early Justin Timberlake & Britney Spears. “Devastated” is Maroon-5 flavored but throws in a little bit of Daughtry as well. Couldn’t help but think it also would have fit in well in the 70s - a bit of a throwback - to the time of Queen. Mark Ballas began playing the guitar at the age of 4 and at the age of 12 began to write and perform his own music, playing guitar, drums and bass. With his best friend Derek Hough, he formed the band Almost Amy, now known as Ballas Hough Band. Other members of the band are Emily Grace - flute/sax/piano/vocals, Sam Marder - bass and Harry Sullivan - drums. Check em out!!!

4 out of 5 stars Do not let the name fool you!, March 26, 2009
By animalgal
To me, the name sounds like a big band from the 1940’s, or a cruise ship band. But they are far from it! Don’t let the name fool you! They sound like a pop or a top 40 band. Two of the band members are in the tv show “Dancing With the Stars, and Derek Hough is the brother of Julianne Hough, another “Dancing with the Stars” dancer, and a very talented singer in her own right. They definitely are a couple of very musically talented siblings! I can see a number of these songs hitting the top 40 charts. The vocals sound, to me, like Justin Timberlake. Who I do not like, but I like these singers. And you can dance to the whole cd! This is one of the few cd’s lately that it is actually worth downloading the whole cd, not just one or two songs. My favorite song is Fall, which has an edge to it. Another song, Break Through, is right up there also! These two songs are going in my Ipod!

I enjoyed the CD quite a bit. I really enjoyed "She Was The One" & "Fall". This CD has music that everyone of all ages can enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Didnt know what to expect, March 24, 2009
By Chemwomyn
I was lucky enough to get this CD free and I honestly did not know what to expect. I thought that perhaps Derreck would be like his sister and be a little bit country, maybe a little rock n roll. Well BHB is neither, its a boy band with a girl in it. Maybe if I was about 15 years younger, I would appreciate it more. Comparing them to other "boy bands", they are definitely better than the cookie cutter NKOTB or Backstreet Boys.
