Review

Rolling Stone (1/20/00, p.59) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...ambitious; the songs meld one into the next, loosely telling the story of a certain Canadian band's rise to obscurity. It's an in joke wrapped in Union Jack colors..."
Q (8/00, pp.105-6) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A small-time-band-goes-global 'concept' - very '70s....A curious, rocking delight."
Melody Maker (9/19/00, p.51) - 4.5 stars out of 5 - "...Welcome to the most sumptuous guitar-pop this side of orgasm..."

Recording information: 1999.

Having satisfied its glam yearnings with the Cheap Trick-meets-Kiss-and-goes-to-a-party-thrown-by-The Posies NAVY BLUES, Sloan's 1999 studio album delved into the questionable waters of the concept album. Rather than diving into worlds of wizards and mythological beasts, these Canadian power-pop junkies instead stayed close to home and wrote about moving away from Halifax in pursuit of rock stardom. By avoiding any kind of pretentious storylines, Sloan came up with some potent ear candy.

Once again, chiming guitars, gorgeous harmonies, and gritty melodies rule as the band bounces between tapping into Johnny Marr's breezier moments with the Smiths ("Waiting for Slow Songs") to Supertramp if John and Paul fronted the band instead of Roger and Rick ("Delivering Maybes"). Despite the pressure and strain of two major-label record deals, Sloan's members retained their childhood bonds ("Friendship") and optimism ("Don't You Believe a Word"). Throughout this extended look in the mirror, Sloan managed to write songs about maintaining sanity within a band scenario (the driving "Sensory Deprivation") and striving to make it in the face of the music industry's unwavering cynicism (the crunchy melodicism of "Losing California").
