Review

Dirty Linen (p.79) - "The group's successful formula, essentially an a capella trio backed by Pops Staple's heavily reverbed electric guitar, was well established by then, as was the repertoire of gospel material."
Living Blues (p.63) - "At Vee-Jay, the group was captured in all its purity....The Staples' plaintive family harmonies were capture for the first time on wax with just Pop's guitar and an occasional drummer for accompaniment."

Title Note

If all you know of the Staple Singers is their "Respect Yourself"-era funky material from the early '70s, BEST OF THE VEE-JAY YEARS will be something of a revelation. Long before they were making groove-heavy records for Stax, they perfected a hypnotic, strikingly original amalgam of gospel, blues, and folk on their early Vee-Jay recordings. Their 1956 single "Uncloudy Day," a huge hit that would become one of their signature tunes, set the template. Pops Staples and his offspring, Mavis, Pervis, Yvonne, and Cleotha, deliver soulful, gospel-influenced harmonies, usually backed only by Pops's unique guitar sound, drenched in tremolo for a haunting, otherworldly effect. The Staple Singers' '50s/early-'60s recordings had one of the most distinctive sounds in R&B, and the musical history they made is handily compiled here.
