Review

Dirty Linen (p.84) - "He had an authentic signature 'chunka-chunka' beat that was irresistible to a whole generation of blues fans..."
Living Blues (p.63) - "For a generation of blues fans who craved both emotional honesty and sophistication, Reed achieved the perfect balance."
No Depression (p.88) - "Near tragic, near comic, and all the way grown-up, Reed's music is filled wit the deep-down-in-the-dumps emotion we still call blues."

Title Note

Audio Remasterer: Randy Perry.

Jimmy Reed's signature shuffle beat and simple, rhythmic guitar riffs are the bedrock upon which most modern blues and all rock & roll were built. What we think of today as the primary generic/default blues licks were codified by Reed on his '50s/early-'60s hits--compiled here on BEST OF THE VEE-JAY YEARS. Reed's was a basic style delivered in a low-key fashion with little embellishment. The raw, infectious groove of such chestnuts as "Big Boss Man," "Baby What You Want Me To Do," and "Bright Lights Big City" made Reed one of the most popular bluesmen of his era, and inspired not only subsequent generations of blues players, but the first few generations of rockers as well. The template for everything from Chuck Berry to the Who can be heard in these humble-yet-historic cuts.
