Review

Dirty Linen (8-9/99, p.72) - "...[Walker] went through two different musical incarnations during his late 60s tenure on Vanguard....The earliest...is from the two albums he recorded with [Circus Maximus]....The bulk of the disc is taken from DRIFTING WAY OF LIFE, Walker's 1969 solo troubadour album..."

Title Note

Includes liner notes by Tom Vickers.

All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology.

This is part of the Vanguard Sessions Series.

Several of these tracks are taken from albums by Jerry Jeff Walker's entertaining, if uneven, psychedelic folk rock band Circus Maximus. However, since the band's best song--the early underground radio favorite "The Wind"--was written by somebody else, it's not included here.

Most of the rest comes from a contractual obligation album Walker recorded in Nashville before he split for Atlantic subsidiary Atco. It's an early example of country rock with Dylanesque overtones. The standout track, however, is the original demo of Walker's best known song, "Mr. Bojangles." It's spare, beautiful, and superior in every way to the more famous official studio version.
