If pop music in the 1980s tended towards glossy, keyboard-driven excess, the Housemartins hovered pleasantly at the smarter end of the spectrum. With breezy Smiths-like melodies, a clean look and sound, and wryly literate lyrics, the U.K. band won over audiences in their home country (enjoying two number-one hit singles) and were embraced in the U.S. as a part of the burgeoning "college rock" alternative to the reigning MTV pop aesthetics. Formed in Hull in the early '80s, the band made two acclaimed albums and an EP before calling it quits. Vocalist Paul Heaton went on to form the Beautiful South, and bassist Norman Cook morphed into the popular DJ Fatboy Slim.
