Title Note

Heavy metal of the '80s era can usually be categorized two ways -- glam and thrash. But there was another genre that burned brightly at the tale end of decade, before fading -- Led Zeppelin "disciples" (heck, Gary Moore even wrote a song about the genre, "Led Clones"). Kingdom Come and Whitesnake are usually at the top of this list, but certainly not far behind was Los Angeles' Great White, whose singer, Jack Russell, had Robert Plant's vocal style down pat. Ten career highlights are showcased on the budget-priced Best Of collection, which for the average metalhead should be all the Great White they will require in their collection. Most of the group's best tracks are included, such as their breakthrough hit, "Rock Me," as well as their massive smash "Once Bitten Twice Shy" (which seemed to be incessantly played on MTV throughout the summer of 1989). Also included are fan favorites that measure up well to the aforementioned tracks, including "Face the Day," "Save Your Love," and a note-for-note perfect rendition of "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," which Led Zeppelin popularized on their classic debut album. Not as preposterous as Kingdom Come, but still pretty darn derivative. ~ Greg Prato

EMI's scant ten-track overview of Los Angeles hard rockers Great White may have the only three songs that any casual fan would ever want ("Rock Me," "Once Bitten Twice Shy," and "Angel Song"), but at least it's concise. However, longtime fans, if they don't already own all of the records, would be better off picking up Capitol's 2001 Greatest Hits collection, which adds four more tunes to EMI's ten. ~ James Christopher Monger
