Since the late 1980s jazz guitarist Bill Frisell has been drawing direct inspiration from folk, country, and blues, anchoring his more esoteric and avant-garde tendencies with roots music. Nonesuch's sampler THE BEST OF BILL FRISELL, VOL. 1: FOLK SONGS documents this trend in Frisell's output, culling tracks from such acclaimed records as IS THAT YOU?, NASHVILLE, and GOOD DOG, HAPPY MAN. Whether giving a moody, impressionistic reading of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," or jamming with Jerry Douglas on the neo-bluegrass of "We're Not From Around Here," Frisell honors tradition while remaining true to his progressive sensibility. His versatile, expansive style and mastery of tone are in evidence on each of this fine compilation's 15 cuts.
