The late, legendary jazz pianist/composer Bill Evans quietly revolutionized the piano trio, with its now-typical line-up of piano/bass/drums. He developed a closer relationship with the bass, and encouraged the bassist and drummer to be less "accompanists" and to present themselves on equal footing with the leader/pianist. His trios were notable not only for their lyricism (which has few peers in jazz), but the way the musicians would engage in musical "conversation."

From 1963-1968, Bill Evans made many of his '60s recordings for the Verve label. THE BEST OF... chronicles a cross-section of his work for that label. There are trios with Gary Peacock on bass and Paul Motion on drums, a duo with guitar great Jim Hall ("My Man's Gone Now"), the edgier bass and drums, respectively, of Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette ("Someday My Prince Will Come,"), solo and quartets with tenor sax legend Stan Getz. For those who are interested in the music of Bill Evans--and there's lots of it--but don't know where to begin, THE BEST OF BILL EVANS ON VERVE is a nice place to start. Time-tested standards, impeccable playing, variety, and, of course, Evans thoughtful, lyrical piano--what else do you need?
