Title Note

Although Anne Dudley and J.J. Jeczalik left behind the pseudo-radical-intellectual theorizing of ZTT Records co-owner Paul Morley when they left the label in 1985, they took the recycle-everything aesthetic of ZTT's other partner, Art of Noise mentor Trevor Horn to heart. Every Art of Noise release contains motifs and musical themes first laid out on Dudley and Jeczalik's 1983 collaboration with Horn, Into Battle With The Art of Noise.

1989's BELOW THE WASTE is no different, as bits from earlier Art of Noise records reappear in new contexts throughout the album. The new twist this time is that several tracks, particularly "Yebo!" and "Chain Gang," also feature performances by African musical legends Mahlathini and Mahotella Queens. Their contributions blend seamlessly with Dudley and Jeczalik's endlessly interesting sound collages, making BELOW THE WASTE another Art of Noise record that is, mysteriously and wonderfully, a success.
