Jellyfish Artist Snapshot:

With shimmering, paisley-dappled power pop owing equal parts to Pretty Things' psychedelics and Badfinger's brilliantine melody (with just a hint of XTC irony), Jellyfish became something of a sensation in the early-1990s. The British press, American college radio, and (for a brief time) MTV all fawned over the band led by Jason Faulkner and his flowing hair, pastel garb, and emotionally drenched vocals. The group released but two studio records, 1990's BELLYBUTTON and 1993's SPILT MILK, before dissolving, but despite a relatively brief existence and showy exterior, the records, featuring iridescent singles like the mournful "That is Why" and the timeless "Baby's Coming Back," have become mainstays on magazine all-time best lists. Faulkner went on to a distinguished, if underappreciated, solo career.

History has shown that there will always be a market for McCartneyesque popsters, such as Squeeze and Crowded House. However, it has also shown that said market does not chartbusters make. And so it went, when San Francisco's Jellyfish landed on the beach in 1990 with BELLYBUTTON, eliciting raves from pop-starved critics and enjoying an MTV hit with "The King Is Half-Undressed", but failing to reach the grunge-caked upper reaches of the US charts. Although writers compared them with 60s artists such as the Beatles and the Beach Boys, their hearts were in the 70s, as evidenced by their overt Queen references and their choice of Albhy Galuten, who had worked with the disco-era Bee Gees, as their producer.
