Review

Rolling Stone (3/9/95, p.67) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good - "...[Slick Rick's] conversational style is so agile, his images so clear, his use of metaphor so unique, it's scary to imagine what he could have come up with if he had been able to concentrate on his work...BEHIND BARS is a tasty appetizer--the main course is yet to come..."
Entertainment Weekly (12/16/94, pp.68-70) - "...Rick's edgy wit is evident and several top producers help him surpass an earlier in-prison effort..."
- Rating: B
Vibe (12/94-01/95, p.120) - "...An engaging hybrid of Rick's previous albums, BEHIND BARS is a trek worth trippin'...the disc's vibrant personality shines through..."
The Source (1/95, p.90) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Still lyrically tight, listeners will have to pay a close ear to the lyrics that come in sharp with a calm tone..."

Title Note

Personnel includes: Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, Nice & Smooth, Warren G (vocals); Al "Purple" Hayes (bass); S.I.D. (drum programming).

Producers: Paul Huston, Vance Wright, Ricky Walters, Easy Mo Bee, Greg Nice.

Few old-school hip-hop artists made prominent comebacks in 1994, but Slick Rick, whose music never seems to grow outdated, dazzled the industry with BEHIND BARS. With his special brand of stories and experiences, Ricky Walters once again presents the original style that has been copped by so many others. There's only one "Ruler," and he's back to reclaim his title.

Rather than focus on the expected subject matter of his incarceration, BEHIND BARS concentrates on the suffering Slick Rick has endured at the hands of women. "A Love That's True (Part 1)" reconstructs his classic "Hey Young World" into an up-tempo story of no-good females, while on "A Love That's True (Part 2)," he goes off on the same themes but on a ragamuffin tip. On the Greg Nice-produced "Let's All Get Down," Rick invites Nice & Smooth to bring their updated style to his stage, but without overpowering his singular flow or stealing his spotlight. "Sittin' In My Car," which features ex-partner Doug E. Fresh, takes the rap-educted ear on a journey back to the mid-'80s, when the beatbox was a "profile" characteristic of the music and its culture.

Though it serves as only a tease for its listeners, BEHIND BARS is a fully-realized idea and among the few hip-hop discs that should meet the approval of both East and West Coast rap fans.
