Named after a mid-century animated short by Norman McLaren, a Canadian filmmaker best remembered for his groundbreaking experiments with image and sound, BEGONE DULL CARE is the third studio album by Hamilton, Ontario-based Junior Boys. While the group's arctic-swept grooves seem a far cry from the whimsical synesthesia of McLaren's hand-drawn films, the album does find Jeremy Greenspan and Matthew Didemus thawing out their signature coldwave ambience in favor of a slightly warmer sound, encompassing a broader palette of influences. Greenspan's vocals, in particular, are more confident and up front, resembling a cross between the blue-eyed falsetto of Daryl Hall and the New Romantic croon of David Sylvian. Relying less, this time around, on production ornamentation, the Boys' songwriting is at the fore; from the twitchy, electro-funk of the Prince-like lead single "Hazel," to the aching orchestral arrangements of "The Animator," to the--nearly--canned saxophone soloing of "Bits & Pieces," BEGONE is a bold and meticulously crafted effort by one of the most original electronic pop acts of the 2000s.
