JazzTimes (11/00, pp.80-2) - "...The most raucous bash of [all their albums]....Katherine Whalen's campy new blend of innocence and experience turns out to be the perfect sweet-n-sour mixer for Jim Mathus' amped-up whiskey howl..."

America's most eclectic and (mostly) unironically rootsy band returns with a set that is, as usual, all over the stylistic map. The Zippers' basic approach is a so-weird-it-works melange of New Orleans R&B, big band swing, 1930s and '40s torch balladry, and whatever else strikes their fancy.

Here, the opening "Bedbugs" is sort of mutated salsa; "Do What" is straight Memphis '60s soul; and "Baby Wants a Diamond Ring" is the sort of bluesy good-time stuff Maria Muldaur used to specialize in. Vocalist Katharine Whalen also turns in a pretty authentic Billie Holiday imitation on "Bent Out of Shape." Best of all is the title tune, a demented sort-of jazz instrumental that deliberately recalls the soundtracks from early '30s Fleischer Brothers cartoon shorts.
