Tanya Donelly's long-awaited second solo album, coming nearly five full years after her solo debut LOVESONGS FOR UNDERDOGS, owes more to the gauzy, angular dream pop of her days in Throwing Muses than her comparatively mainstream mid-'90s stint as the leader of the much more accessible Belly. Where LOVESONGS FOR UNDERDOGS sounds basically like the third Belly album, the far stronger BEAUTYSLEEP is a mature, poignant record that's paradoxically more elliptical yet more emotionally direct.
For possibly the first time in Donelly's career, it's easy to find real emotions in the jumble of striking but often disconnected images, like the post-breakup despair of "So Much Song" and the way "The Night You Saved My Life" and "Keeping You" seem to relate to Donelly's new life as a first-time mother. For the first time, the songs are built not only on Donelly's usual mix of acoustic and electric guitars, but a bed of keyboards, samples, and tape loops that give a striking new dimension to Donelly's sound, especially on the trippy opener "Life is But a Dream." The album also features a duet with the late Mark Sandman of Morphine on the ghostly "Moonbeam Monkey."

Album Description

'Beautysleep' is the second album from the former Throwing Muses and Belly member Tanya Donelly. The album sees Donelly progress from the indie pop of Belly to more mature and thoughtful songwriting. 'Beautysleep' also features an appearance from the late Mark Sandman of Morphine in one of his last ever recordings.
