The early 2000s saw something of a renaissance in metal and hardcore bands; new acts cropped up left and right while pushing the music in progressive directions. Bury Your Dead stand out among their contemporaries as keepers of the traditionalist flame. The sheer ferocity and intensity of their attack is never diluted with experimentalism or studio pyrotechnics. The band is as tight and accomplished as any in the genre, and BEAUTY AND THE BREAKDOWN shows BYD honing their sound to a body-pummeling perfection. The fairy tale-like narrative included in the liner notes, and the corresponding song titles, give BEAUTY the faint whiff of a concept album, but the music is pure, unadulterated, beautifully executed metalcore.
