On his fourth album as a singer-songwriter, Billy Bob Thornton remains one of the few actors in recent memory to maintain a solid, respectable musical career. Thornton is a genuinely gifted lyricist with an eye for quirky, unpredictable details (as one might expect from the man who wrote films as unconventional as SLING BLADE); as a singer, his deep, half-spoken vocal style is exactly halfway between Johnny Cash and Kurt Wagner (of the Nashville chamber-pop collective Lambchop). Thornton and his musical partner, Brad Davis, concoct 12 pieces of unconventional but appealing alt-country featuring the outstanding "Hearts Like Mine," which gossip columnists might interpret as a commentary on Thornton's superstar ex-wife Angelica Jolie, and the sharp political observations of "Hope For Glory."
