Review

The Wire (p.69) - "[A] strong and nuanced collection of brief, Madlib-ish sketches and cut-and-pasted freaky spiritual jazz workouts."

Title Note

Additional personnel: Jawwaad Taylor (trumpet); Shape Of Broad Minds, Capital Peoples, Stacy Epps, Cee-Knowledge.

Philly-based producer/beat junkie Dr. Who Dat? (also known as Jneiro Jarel) comes on strong with 18 tracks of chill piano loops, jazzy breaks, hard boom-bap beats, and softer progressive funk on his debut release, BEAT JOURNEY. Aside from the odd DJ toasting and a few vocal samples, Jarel's brand of hip-hop is strictly instrumental, and his production has an infectiously tripped-out feel that fits comfortably alongside the sounds of musical space cadets such as Sun Ra and Kool Keith.
