Specializing in post-hardcore sketches wrought in rusty hooks and twisted knots of nervous noise, November 5th, 1955, are a gleeful throwback to the adventurous '90s, when giants like Fugazi and Drive Like Jehu treated punk's borders as a suggestion rather than an absolute. The songs on BEARS OF THE SEA turn right when they should go left and hit unexpected cul-de-sacs at impossible angles. "Jelly Side Down" morphs through various modes of harsh, angular noodling without losing shape entirely, and "We Are Rainbow Bridge" unspools like frayed, backwards emo, moved along by galloping drums, hoarse vocals, and anthemic guitar anti-heroics.
