One hesitates to sing the praises of every young, shaggy band of Southern eccentrics making rollicking, PET SOUNDS-inspired albums, for fear of being graced and abandoned by yet another pretender to the Neutral Milk Hotel throne. But Annuals leader Adam Baker, just 20 years old at the release of this 2006 album, seems so preternaturally self-possessed, and his songs radiate such involuntary brilliance, that the listener has to trust that this is the beginning of a long and fruitful creative arc.

The songs are recorded in dense layers of electric and acoustic sound, with gentle synth swooshes and muffled vocals. They possess a pastoral, organic quality, and often explode in the middle into an exuberant, sparks-generating noise that reflects joy, awe, and angst, like Van Morrison's ASTRAL WEEKS as performed by Arcade Fire. The best example of this is "Brother," which showcases both Baker's songwriting skills and the lovely interplay between band members.
