Review

Rolling Stone (p.129) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he selection is so good, the set doubles as a best-of -- it's a fine intro to the group's tuneful world of lovelorn geekdom."
Spin (p.100) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[The] sessions emphasize the droll felicity of essential early songs...tightening the comedic timing and ramping up the tension..."
Entertainment Weekly (p.119) - "Frontman Stuart Murdoch adds a little guitar jangle to 'The Stars of Track and Field'....Serious fans will covet the four excellent unreleased songs from a 2001 recording." -- Grade: B+
Magnet (p.108) - "[A] snapshot of the years when B&S ruled the school....It shows the band at the top of its delicate game."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.85) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[W]hen it works, as on a reworked 'Lazy Jane,' it remains massively moving."

Title Note

Issued in 2008, this collection presents a fine set of BBC radio sessions by the Scottish indie-pop ensemble Belle & Sebastian. Much of the compilation consists of recordings dating back to 1996-97, a formative period when singer/guitarist Stuart Murdoch and company rarely performed in concert, making these live-in-the-studio tracks significant, particularly a notably altered version of "Lazy Line Painter Jane" (here titled "Lazy Jane"). The four previously unreleased songs that Belle & Sebastian cut for John Peel in 2001 are the true highlights of BBC SESSIONS, however, with the act expressing its adoration for the Go-Betweens on the charmingly quirky "Shoot the Sexual Athlete," and vocalist Isobel Campbell providing one of her more memorable and vibrant turns with the band on "The Magic of a Kind Word."
