Bettie Serveert Artist Snapshot:

With their chiming guitars, upbeat tunes, and defenseless vocals, Dutch pop-rockers Bettie Serveert have, since the early 1990s, shined a deceptively sunny face toward the world, obscuring a gloomy fixation on doomed relationships that only becomes apparent when the lyrics are closely examined. That tension between dark and light endeared them to indie fans and made lead singer Carol van Dijk a heartthrob among indie-rockers of the late 20th century. Their popular acclaim arguably peaked with 1995's LAMPREY, but the band continued to tour and to release tuneful, interesting records through the early 2000s.

Title Note

Bettie Serveert: Carol Van Dyk (vocals, guitar); Peter Visser (guitar); Martijin Blankestijn (keyboards); Herman Bunskoeke (bass guitar); Gino Geudens (drums).

Recording information: 2006.

It seems that the time spent playing in the faux-country side-project Chitlin' Fooks in the early 2000s has rubbed off on Bettie Serveert vocalist Carol Van Dijk, who sounds more at ease with the sparser, acoustic arrangements found on this late-career album. The vocals--usually a little buried in the mix--stand out bravely. Her quavering, wounded performance on "Roadmovies," the album opener, invites the listener in and doesn't let go until the final track, a remake of their own "Certainlie" from LOG 22. But the bravura piece is "Hell = Other People," a sad and scathing folk-rock number that makes world-weary resignation sound so darn pretty.
