Title Note

This disc received the 1999 Grammy Awards for "Best Engineered Album, Classical," "Best Classical Album," and "Best Choral Performance."

This disc contains a rich and surprising harvest: three 20th-century cantatas, all major works by major composers which are, especially in the cases of the Barber and the Bart¢k, not as well known as they deserve to be and not well represented on record. This has been partly a matter of practicality, as they are scored for large vocal and instrumental forces yet are relatively brief, thus not cost-efficient concert vehicles for symphony orchestras. Then there is the matter of attitude. In the 'Prayers of Kierkegaard' Barber, known for his warm, romantic tonality, writes in a fiercely dissonant style which recalls the brooding violence of his ballet 'Medea,' while Bart¢k's 'Cantata Profana' is just plain weird, setting a pagan Romanian text about hunters being transformed into stags in a restless, almost other-worldly manner, not really like any of his other mature works. By comparison, the Vaughan Williams 'Dona Nobis Pacem' is relatively straightforward, an antiwar cantata of 1936 drawing on texts from Walt Whitman and the Bible. All the performances here are first rate and Telarc's sound is luxurious. As a trifecta, this entry is nigh unbeatable.
