Title Note

Kermit Ruffins And The Barbecue Swingers: Kermit Ruffins (vocals, trumpet); Corey Henry (rap vocals, trombone); Emile Vinette (piano); Kevin Morris (bass); Jerry Anderson (drums).

Recorded at Tipitina's, New Orleans, Louisiana on November 14, 1997.

Includes liner notes by John Sinclair.

The music of Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers is quintessential New Orleans. Ruffins' warm, bright trumpet and gravelly, conversational vocals conjure the spirit of the city's Number One son, Louis Armstrong, and the quintet's lively arrangements and laid back attitude are as expansive and fun-loving as a crawfish boil or a midnight party on the bayou. This set, recorded live at the famous Tipitinas, is the next best thing to soaking up their Big Easy vibe in person.

Like the Rebirth Brass Band--a group Ruffins co-founded and played with through the '80s before striking out for his own projects in the '90s--the Swingers collapse early century jazz traditionalism into a sound that includes more contemporary styles like funk and hip-hop. In-the-pocket grooves such as "Just Showin' Off," hip-hop inflected cuts such as "Peep This Groove Out" (featuring a rap by trombonist Corey Harris), and a get-up-and-shout version of the Rebirth original "Do Watcha Wanna," prove that the ensemble's as versed in the new school as they are in the old. In short, Ruffins and Co. offer something for everyone prepared to party--and the skill, style and warmth with which the offer is made make LIVE! irresistible.
