Review

Entertainment Weekly (10/23/98, p.80) - "...San Francisco's Manning crossed the Pacific to record with such Kiwi stalwarts as Chris Knox (of Tall Dwarfs) and David Kilgour (The Clean) and returns with seven beautifully crafted tracks that run from lush...to lilting." - Rating: A-

Title Note

Personnel includes: Barbara Manning, Chris Knox, David Kilgour, Robert Scott, Joey Burns, Graeme Downes, John Convertino.

San Francisco-based songstress Barbara Manning spent some time in a country where she's very popular, and recorded with that country's best-known alternative-scene players--the result is IN NEW ZEALAND. She's accompanied by David Kilgour, Chris Knox and Robert Scott (the Bats), as well as Americans Joey Burns and John Convertino (also known as Calexico). With this album, Manning gives her darker side full reign.

"Your Pies" is a tirade against someone's cooking that sounds like a cross between mid- '60s Jefferson Airplane and Syd Barrett. The haunting, piano-driven "Everything Happens By Itself" is a perfect distillation of resignation, and "Whatever I Do is Right/Wrong," with its eerie slide guitar shimmering like a mirage, has the narrator taking an unsparing view of her bad and good sides. Unlike other albums by Manning and her (now-defunct) band the S.F. Seals, there are no pop/folk-rockers here. IN NEW ZEALAND features plenty of distorted guitars, mournful piano and an overall reflective--though decidedly not mellow--tone reminiscent at times of John Lennon's PLASTIC ONO BAND. Manning takes the introspective route and makes it more interesting--and harrowing--than most singer/songwriters could.
