While some early metal bands have taken the Metallica route of toning down their sound to appeal to a wider audience, with BALLADS OF A SONGMAN Grave Digger delivers a record as fiercely aggressive as their debut, released nearly three decades earlier. The power metal formula may not be new but it is still powerful: pile-driving double kick drum, jackhammer guitar riffs, alternately growling and shrieking vocals, and lyrics about death, despair, and darkness. Highlights include the title track's frightening Teutonic choruses and the Motorhead-esque "Stormrider."
