Title Note

Personnel: Charlie Haden (bass); Steve Slagle (soprano & alto saxophones, flute, clarinet); Jim Pepper (soprano & tenor saxophones, flute); Dewey Redman (tenor saxophone); Michael Mantler (trumpet); Don Cherry (pocket trumpet); Sharon Freeman (French horn); Gary Valente (trombone); Jack Jeffers (tuba); Carla Bley (piano, glockenspiel); Mick Goodrick (guitar); Paul Motian (drums, percussion).

Recorded in Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany in November 1982. Includes liner notes by Charlie Haden.

THE BALLAD OF THE FALLEN is actually the second album by Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, recorded a dozen years after their bracing 1970 debut. Several key players are again on hand--Don Cherry, Michael Mantler, and Paul Motian. Most notably, Carla Bley is again the arranger for some of the material, besides playing piano and glockenspiel. She also contributes "Too Late," a starkly beautiful number here performed as a duet for bass and piano.

Haden's diverse musical past contributes depth and resonance to this material, which is full of human compassion and eloquent outrage directed at injustices of the world. He gives his heartfelt passions honest musical form. The title song alone, a piece from El Salvador written to an eloquent poem, is worth the price of admission.
