Review

Entertainment Weekly (p.94) - "There's a nice middle grond here between her crossover ambitions and mountain-mama classicism." -- Grade: B+

Title Note

The inaugural release on her own Dolly Records finds the ever-mercurial Dolly Parton moving away from the bluegrass/acoustic-oriented sound she explored on her albums for the Sugar Hill label from 1999 to 2005. Never content to stay in one place, she traverses a wide array of styles on BACKWOODS BARBIE. Opening track "Better Get to Livin'" has an anthemic, contemporary-country feel that's overtly radio-friendly. The jazzy, piano-flecked "The Lonesomes" adds an easy swing to the proceedings. "I Will Forever Hate Roses" and "Made of Stone" offer proof that Dolly still has a way with a good old country ballad.

While most of the tunes on BACKWOODS BARBIE (including the incisive, autobiographical title track) come from Parton's own pen, she shows her customary flair for covers as well, lending a surprising folk-pop flavor to the Fine Young Cannibals' '80s dance-pop hit "She Drives Me Crazy" and putting a touch of twang into Smokey Robinson's classic soul ballad "Tracks of My Tears." Even in her sixties, the country icon shows no signs of settling into a rut.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST, March 3, 2008

If country radio chooses to ignore this latest project by the most gifted woman in country music history, it will be beyond shameful. Dolly Partons new cd is simply stunning! From her incredible songwriting skills to that unmistakable beautiful soprano, she still towers over all the other competition. Dolly, you are simply untouchable! Fantastic job on this one!!!

Dolly - you are a genius! I cannot stop listening to this CD! Better Get to Livin really makes me get off my butt and get to changing my life. Made of Stone is filled with such emotion and I love it. Dolly can really turn an old favorite into a new favorite with Drives me Crazy (Fine Young Cannibals classic) - Dollys version rocks and will make you want to get up and dance! Tracks of my Tears is a Smokey Robinson classic and Dolly makes this song 100% better. There is nothing Dolly cant sing and this CD proves it with everything from pure country to new mainstream country to jazz (The Lonesomes). this CD gets an A+ from me!

Better Get to Livin’ is the track that has been unbelievably available since August last year!!!! It is a fantastic song with as much impact as a Country-pop song can give. This track sits nicely in the album and has you tapping your feet and clicking your fingers (and I dare anyone to try and not do this). It’s Dolly’s own ‘’kick ass’’ song –telling us all that life is worth Livin’ and to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and live life to the full!! Made of Stone is a wonderful song. The emotional content in that song is so heart-wrenching. Dolly’s tearful vocals towards the end makes you want to press the ‘’back’’ button and hear it ‘’just one more time’’ before I see what gems are on the rest of the CD. The track is about a man who blatantly acts selfish, sleeps around and just treats the woman who really loves him like crap…….No other artist could sing this with such feeling and emotion. I Will Forever Hate Roses. This is my second favorite song on the CD. It reminds me of a song Tammy Wynette once did called ‘’Liar’s Roses’’ and indeed the story is similar. This guy sends Dolly Roses to tell her he is breaking up with her. Dolly loves all the flowers of the world. The rose however poses as a flower of hurt. ‘’The Pain it Imposes’’ is a brilliant play on words. Yes, Dolly will Forever love the Tulips, the Posy’s but she will Forever Hate Roses……. Makes me cry so hard. Somebody’s Everything. Dolly craves to be everything to someone in this song. Apparently she has read too many fairy tales and lives her life in make believe in this one. Dolly is looking for passion, fire, reality – they should all be one in the same – Somebody’s Everything. Almost a gospel type of track this is a powerful ballad where Dolly reaches the highest notes her voice can reach. I could see her using this song as the closing tune for her upcoming World Tour. It’s one of those where the crowd would be on their feet after the first few sentences and the whole auditorium would be filled with electric emotion. Dolly hangs the ‘’Moon and Sun’’ in this amazing song. Now, what can be said about the track ‘’Cologne?’’ This must be the best song on the whole CD. This is the one I personally put on repeat over and over and over and over and over again. In this song Dolly is the ‘’other woman’’ and I cannot put into words how moving and highly emotive this song is. Goodness me, this must go down in history as a Dolly Parton classic. ‘’I’m not out to hurt someone, not you, not her not anyone –but I got Heartaches of my Own, why, I can’t even wear Cologne. This will receive many a standing ovation if Dolly sings this in her upcoming world tour. The cover art for this CD is also outstanding. The vibrant pink cover is extremely girly –it will go down well with Dolly’s myriad gay fans all over the world and rightly so. The pink sticker on the front of the CD highlights ‘’Better Get to Livin’’ and ‘’Jesus and Gravity’’ as the singles from the album. The booklet is full of lyrics and even has some of the little plastic ‘’Dolly Dolls’’ of yesteryear featured inside. Anyone noticed the nice little touch with the car mirror on the back of the cover... This is a classic Dolly Parton CD. Joe Skelly http://www.dollypartonfans.net (Home of DOLLY PARTNERS UK)
