Murray Perahia continues his traversal of the keyboard works of J. S. Bach. On this outing he moves away from solo pieces such as the Goldberg Variations and English Suites, and concentrates his efforts on concertos, specifically Nos. 1, 2, and 4. Perahia does double duty on this recording, as soloist and conductor. Perahia is no newcomer to conducting from the keyboard, and his keen musicianship should never be underestimated.

As expected, he negotiates the solo part of these masterworks with his usual blend of elegance, musical acuity, and impeccable technique. He maneuvers through the fleet passages of the Allegro sections with a sure-fingered ease that projects lightness and clarity, and in slow movements, such as the Adagio from the First Concerto and the Larghetto from the Fourth, demonstrates his innate ability to fully express the lyricism of a melodic line. The qualities that distinguish his playing--musical finesse, scrupulous attention to detail, and clarification of textures, as well as a finely maintained balance and precise articulation--also inform his conducting, and, consequently, the performance of the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. This is a polished, intelligent endeavor that fosters anticipation of Perahia's continued exploration of the Baroque repertoire.
