Title Note

Like most of the music that flowed from his pen, Johann Sebastian Bach's cantatas for solo soprano are bewitching works, abounding in contrapuntal ingenuity and lyrical beauty. And similar to his treatment of other solo instruments-the violin partitas and cello suites come immediately to mind-Bach divides the soprano voice into two and sometimes three registers, rendering a single line polyphonic. Or, as in the case of 'Ich bin vergngt mit meinem Glcke,' Bach gives the second aria a distinctly lower tessitura (or general vocal range) from that of the first aria, thereby creating the impression of two different voices. Bach achieves this effect by exploiting the different timbres of different vocal registers, and this play with timbres is not lost on the superb soloist heard on this recording-Nancy Argenta. In each of these cantatas, Bach couples the voice with an obbligato instrument (oboe, flute, and trumpet), and, listening attentively, one can discern Argenta's subtle timbral modulations matching the chosen instrument. This is, indeed, such a lovely recording on so many fronts that it is difficult to imagine not being swept away by its charms.

REVIEWS:

International Record Review (3/00, p.101) - "...The true Bach soprano needs a formidable armoury of technical qualities - vocal agility, a wide compass, excellent intonation and a strong, even tone, in addition to a wide range of expression and style - and Nancy Argenta has all these..."
