The Pink Mountaintops Artist Snapshot:

After spending the late '90s and early '00s recording as Jerk With A Bomb, Stephen McBean adopted the Pink Mountaintops name just before forming Black Mountain with many of his friends in the Vancouver rock scene. While Black Mountain had a decidedly collective feel, McBean used Pink Mountaintops as a vehicle for his solo work. Mining the same classic rock vibe as Black Mountain, McBean balanced a mellower, acoustic milieu with fuzzed out grooves spiked with cheap digital beats. Over several albums for Jagjaguwar, he perfected a uniquely swaggering singer-songwriter prototype: simultaneously intimate, druggy, sensual, and heartfelt.

Review

Uncut (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] downbeat, solipsistic but utterly beautiful amalgam of mood-altering substances and 1980s alt.rock; the nod to Sonic Youth in the title is no coincidence."
Magnet (p.110) - "[S]et to dirty-needle Velvets rumbles, Jesus And Mary Chain chainsaw squall and ghastly slow-motion psychedelia that could scare fellow acid-fried freaks Dead Meadow and the Gris Gris into rehab."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Informed by a life in music and smart enough to count higher than his influences, McBean remains a fascinating prospect whatever colour mountain he comes round."

Title Note

The Pink Mountaintops are the solo brainchild of Vancouver musician Stephen McBean, who is also a member of ramshackle rockers Black Mountain. The Mountaintops' second album expands on the lo-fi promise of its predecessor, with nods to sonic explorers like the Velvet Underground on "Cold Criminals," post-punk outfits like Sonic Youth on "New Drug Queens," and anyone who's ever had too much acid on "Plastic Man, You're the Devil." Though McBean's songs occasionally seem like casually tossed-off rock & roll vignettes, their unabashed hedonism is addictive.
